In 2005 the International Maritime Organization decided to reduce Sulphur Oxides (Sox) emissions from vessels over the following 15 years. After the implementation of SECAs in North and Baltic Seas during 2015, the last step will come into force in 2020, reducing sulphur oxides worldwide.
The limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on ships operating outside the emission control areas (SECAs) will be reduced to 0.5% m/m (mass by mass) from 1 January 2020. For populations living close to the coast and ports, the environmental benefits will have a major impact on these regions, improving air quality and protecting the local environment.
In order to comply with the IMO directive as of 1 January 2020, Containerships must ensure that our fleet is prepared in time. This preparation will start during the 4th quarter through various means such as flushing and cleaning of ship’s fuel tanks and adapted bunker management. As of 1 January 2020, any non-compliant fuel (above 0,5% Sulphur) must be removed unless the vessel is operating with scrubbers. Containerships will ensure compliance with the respective IMO directive for guaranteeing an uninterrupted operation in 2020. The fleet operated is consisting of vessels running either on Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil and Marine Gas Oil, with scrubbers or on Liquid Natural Gas. As a result, the vessel running costs will increase significantly. In order to compensate for the cost impact of the upcoming Sulphur regulations, the MARPOL surcharge will be enforced from 15th November 2019.
